This program serves as a tool with which an individual can build skills during their preparation and training to become a study group leader or Lay Dharma teacher. Completion of this program is a stepping stone towards acceptance into - or continuing with - approved Lay Dharma Training and ideally will augment their study under the guidance of Monastic teachers and lineage holders.

  • This module will begin with online lectures covering the cultural and religious context into which the Buddha was born and would then attain enlightenment. This will be followed by a description of the Buddha’s life and teachings culminating with the Paranirvana.

  • This module will cover the history and techniques of Ch’an Buddhist Meditation, including some theory. Techniques in practice will be included as exercises, as well as techniques in teaching and/or guiding others in meditation.

  • This module will examine important religious leadership issues for Buddhists in America, with special attention paid to areas that have traditionally been neglected in ministry studies. In addition, the workshop will provide a space for students to explore the ways in which this material might deepen their own personal practice as well as their approach to religious leadership.
